Methods of motivation
1. Make your goals SMART, not fuzzy
A vague goal like “find a job” is about as motivating as soggy toast. Instead, make your aspirations SMART — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. For example, putting “apply to five jobs today” on your to-do list is crystal clear and actionable. And ticking it off makes tackling the next one feel way easier.
2. Listen to music
Music is an instant mood booster. Struggling to crawl out of bed? Blast your favorite song. Coffee #5 failing to deliver the energy boost? Let a high-energy pop or rock track do the heavy lifting. Need laser focus to wrap up a big project? Instrumental music may help. Find the songs or genres that match your mood or task, and use them to your advantage.
3. Dream it, see it, do it
Visualization is a technique used by many successful people to stay motivated. Picture yourself finally completing all your tasks. Imagine the sheer joy of having them done. The more vividly you imagine the process, the more likely you are to take action. But don’t just visualize the end result — see yourself powering through the effort and steps needed to get there.
4. Treat yourself
Bribery isn’t just for kids — it works wonders on adults too. Promise yourself a reward, like pizza night or binge-watching that new show, if you focus for two hours straight. Motivation is a lot easier when there’s a treat waiting at the finish line.
5. Phone a friend (for accountability)
If you’ve got a task you keep avoiding, call in backup. Tell your partner or friend your plan and ask them to check on you. If you don’t follow through, offer a consequence — like doing their dishes or an errand they’ve been avoiding. Suddenly, that task looks a lot more appealing.
6. Surround yourself with positivity
It’s impossible to be positive all the time — sometimes, you just need to vent. But don’t get stuck in the negativity. Recharge by hanging out with uplifting people, moving your body, or carving out a moment to breathe. Maybe it’s yoga, a solo dance party, or rewatching your favorite feel-good movie, but do whatever fills your cup.
7. Take care of yourself
Pushing yourself non-stop isn’t heroic, it’s draining. Listen to your body: rest when you’re tired, step away when you’re overwhelmed, stay hydrated, and nourish yourself with healthy food. And sometimes just stepping outside and touching grass can work wonders.
8. Pick a personal mantra
Find an inspirational quote that speaks to you. Write it on a sticky note, put it on your mirror, or save it in your notes app. Wondering where to find that perfect inspiration? Stay tuned.
